I have posted about the elf (age 7 & 8 at the time) seated 20 rows away from me on 8 hours flights.
He is not an anxious traveler, and knows how to behave.

However, we do travel frequently, and when he was younger (2-5) and had been "reassigned" far away, I would seat us in our "correct" seats.
Then I would ask the Aisle passenger next to him if s/he would like to sit next to an unattended child or to have my seat.

I never had an instance where someone chose door number one.
