I have recently been layed off from my job. I am 60 yrs old. My severance and medical benefits will run out in Dec. I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of options for health insurance aside from Cobra. Cobra will cost me about $500 per month.

You should check to see if your state has any programs available. For example, I know Illinois used to have a state program for people who didn't have access to group health insurance. (It might not be available during the COBRA period, but I don't know.)
