...I have to agree that it was because renting allowed me to beef up my savings that we were ultimately able to buy our home. And I was actually willing to continue renting for a good while longer had we not succeeded in finding this home. I found that the percentage of income spent on rent was low enough to make several other financial goals possible sooner - home ownership was just one and plumping up retirement savings was another, not to mention whacking down debt...Having my financial freedom trumps any specific living arrangement, and for me, renting has been a means to that end.

DW and I are renters and proud of it at this point in life. Although I do agree with the article's premise, for us renting has turned into a method of LBOM... and just simply saving hundreds of dollars a month over the cost of owning at this point.

We pay in rent what we would likely pay in taxes, insurance, and upkeep alone on a house in our neighborhood.
