I haven't seen the whole argument here, but in Tony's defense...

I have had times in the past where I have had cards open with available credit has counted against me (too much available credit). Another thing that's kinda stupid is the stuff that I hadn't even applied for. It was a bunch of weird companies that wanted to offer me credit by mail. Also, I think most of us look at the long-term effect on our credit. If creditors hold closing accounts against you for the short term that's not such a bad thing, and as things are paid off they will see things differently.
