I lived for 18 months in Vicenza (Courtesy of the US Army), 35 miles northwest of Venice. In that time, I only once saw pizza on a menu, and that was in Florence - a tourist city. I believe pizza is a Sicilian (maybe including Naples) thing.

Rome is full of pizza joints. Ultra-thin crispy crust, minimal toppings. By far the best I’ve ever eaten. I can’t stand the ones whose crust is thick and soft bread-like. I think that includes the so-called NY style pizza (I’m not sure exactly of the definition of that term) and so-called deep dish pizzas. Yuck.
