Used the Better Homes and Garden recipe book as a basis, plus clean out the refrigerator. Threw in a turnip. Also, I prefer pork instead of beef. Cut up some yellow and green bell peppers. A little wine. (adds savor.)

My mother was never a very good cook, but her stews were the worst. She used left-over pot roast, with lots of fat. For years I thought I didn't like stew.

The Countess gives my stew high marks. I serve it over rice.
