I might put half in a 5 yr CD or like and the other half in an index fund.

That is one reasonable approach.

There are index funds, and there are index funds. The Vanguard Total Stock Market Fund, for example, provides exposure to large, mid, and small cap stocks, though because large caps make up the bulk of the capitalization of the US stock market and thus also is the bulk of the Vanguard Total Stock Market Fund.

My Vanguard holdings consist of:
- The Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund
- The Vanguard Tax-Managed Interantional Fund (instead of the Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund).
- The Vanguard REIT Index Fund
- The Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund.
