I ran into a similar situation with my medical care provider. The health center claimed that a bill had been sent out and unfortunately it never showed up. My insurance company also failed to inform me that the cost for the service provided was my responsibility. I checked my credit report and found that my score had dropped considerably because of this default, in their eyes, though I never received any communication from the provider or the insurance company.

I settled the balance and after some investigation, found that the provider had failed to update my records in their database. Consequence, a hit on my credit score because the bill was sent to my old address.

However, the provider was very considerate and after I paid them, they issued a letter stating that all balances have been paid in full and I faxed a copy of the letter to the collection agency and the 3 credit bureaus. One week later I checked my credit report and sure enough my score had jumped to where it should have been.

It definitely helps to have a written record once the balances have been paid in full and follow it up by calling the credit reporting agencies and updating your records by faxing the written record obtained from the creditor.
