I read the trilogy but preferred "The Hunger Games". The books are categorized as young adult novels and are really much more thought and discussion provoking than the actual ease of the read implies.
The books' themes are social and political---they grapple with moral issues such as severe poverty, family values, and government versus individual control.
The setting (games) from which these lessons are taught is brutally violent.
The books are quick reads, but I mulled over them long after I finished. I would highly recommend them to mature teens and adults.
I'd suggest reading them along with your teens before viewing the film.
