I read today that the average cost per hour of the GM worker (including health / retirement benefits) is $74 per hour. That is significantly above any other manufacturing average hourly wage. Like pilots in the airlines the UAW must make sacrifices to return to profitablity for GM. Management has certainly made bad (and possibly criminal) decisions and will also have to sacrifice to make GM competitive again. The challenge is trust betwn the two different sides. If the unions take too big a cut then management will take advantage of them (at least that is what the believe-- probably rightly so). Who wants to change their standard of living late in life for a slim chance of any benefit?
