I think for that you can look at the composers - the Sherman Brothers were very much ensemble composers: It's A Small World, Tiki Room, Great Big BeautifuL Tomorrow. Yes, I know those are theme park examples (been listening to a podcast of a Richard Sherman concert), but it's representative of the type of songs they composed. Think the songs from Mary Popins, Bedknobs & Broomsticks. Sure there were some solo numbers but there were also group anthems. Then Alan Menkin came along, writing a lot of love songs as duets.

Now, it's all about promoting specific artists, or one artist featuring another. It's how pop music itself has changed. You want to see how music is influencing pop culture is influencing music, pay attention to the songs used to audition for reality TV talent shows.

Who tends to remember movies by their music more so than the story or actors...
