I think he has an interest in learning

then you weren't here the last time he came through.

JCOC's style is as if I had gone to the Maintaining a Car board with the following:

my oil is all black, what should I do?

Car Expert #1: umm ... have you tried changing the oil?

no, I don't think there's anything wrong with the oil, I think it's my carburetor, I demand that someone tell me how to fix my carburetor

Car Expert #s 2-5: you can't know that you have carburetor problems until you change your oil

I know it's not my oil, I got my greazy fingerprints all over a car book at Borders and I'm sure I saw something about carburetors

Car Expert #6: have you read any auto maintenance books?

just what I've read when I'm in Borders on free coffee day. I refuse to actually spend money on any books

Car Expert #3: well I'm sure that anything you read about automobiles is going to recommend an oil change first. You really should buy a book, Ed Miller's Small Stakes Auto Maintenance is a great place to start. Read that and then come back with questions.

Car Expert #4: when was the last time you changed your oil

I've had the car for four years. Oil should last longer than that. I have cooking oil that is more than six years old and it's just fine.

Car Expert #2: I feel a little dumber now.

Car Expert #1: look, we can't help you unless you are willing to either educate yourself or listen to our basic advice.

I don't need advice, I need to know how to fix my carburetor.

etc.
