I think that it would be good for Genentech if Novartis took over Roche. Genentech's top notch pipeline is largely due to their strength as a deal maker. Run down their list of drug candidates and you'll see that quite a few of them have come in through deals w/ other biotechs. One factor for this is Genentech's experience bringing drugs through trials and into the market. Another factor was Roche as they were the worldwide marketing arm that brought Genentech's (and their partner's) drugs to the rest of the world. So now if Genentech has the same arrangement w/ a Novartis+Roche supercompany,and they will, it can only help Genentech in their attempt to form new strategic alliances.

I think that the speculative merger between Genentech and Chiron would not be a good idea and probably won't happen. Both are highly successful, but it's not a good fit. Neither one needs to merge to drive productivity at this point.
