I think that the number of people I see "knitting on the move" is a barometer of the fashionability of knitting.

I collect vintage sewing books from the 1930s & 40s and a number of them have patterns for making knitting purses, some of them quite fashionable. I think that especially during the WWII years they didn't want to be without their knitting, even when they went calling.

The big four pattern companies now even have patterns for all sorts of totes, some of which would be great for knitting bags.
