I too am in CA and yes FTB wants its share of everything. Its not a matter of timing its a matter of having the cash to pay the taxes vs taking proceeds to do so coupled with keeping taxes in the 24% bracket instead of anything higher. I have been for many years now moving bits here and there, this is just a one off year because of severance payout i have the ability next year to move around 150k, the prudent course is to sell off a sizable portion of the position i need to reallocate. Just keep arguing with myself otherwise :-).
