I too prefer audiobooks for convenience. I set them at 1.4x speed to help offset that they are slower than reading. And the brain adapts pretty quickly for that.

I have found that audiobooks have helped me not be in such a rush when driving, too. Good for traveling and exercise.

But, I am a cheapskate. After an initial subscription to Audible, I found that my public library offered much of what I wanted for free via Overdrive. I probably get 98% of my audiobooks that way now.

I really liked "Old Man's War" series as well. I need to get to Red Shirts still.

If you need more Sci-Fi and have not read David Brin, it seems like his Uplift Universe was interesting. But it has been a long time since I read it. But I thought there were some of his themes in the Old Man's War universe.
