My niece lived in Edmonton for a while. "The lowest temperature ever recorded in Edmonton was -49.4 °C (-56.9 °F), on January 19 and 21, 1886." This is not typical, but having been raised in Toronto, it was too cold for her. She and her family moved to a small island near Vancouver.
