I use a combination of caller ID and answering machine. If the calling number is not recognized by my phone’s caller ID/stored numbers then I let it go to the answering machine. If it’s someone I know or if it’s important they are sure to leave a message and I can call right back using the phone’s call log. I can also screen the message and pick up if need be.

I’ve been doing this for about 18 months and the number of calls has diminished greatly. I think they realize it is a waste of the time to keep calling a number that never picks up. Most of these callers are using some kind of computer dialing system and they are in the business of maximizing their effects.
