i was in a bmw club back in the early 70's and went to a presentation for ''all proof synthetic motor oil''. the presenter recommended doing a little experiment:

before you change the oil, bring the engine up to operating temperature and note the engine speed. turn it off, change the oil to ''all proof'', fire it up and check the engine speed.

changing to the synthetic i gained 2-300 rpm at idle.

i've used synthetics ever since. : >)
