I was taught in school that Goa was the primary source of Indian Christians, but our driver in Cochin had a cross tattooed on his arm and a rosary dangling from his car’s mirror.
Although Goa was a Portuguese colony for a long time, the largest group of Christians in the country is in Kerala. they are known as "Syrian Christians," because they trace their conversion back to St. Thomas who supposedly stopped there on the way from Syria in the 2nd century AD. Kerala has a very large Christian population, as well as a large Muslim population (known as Malabar Muslims).

The food traditions of each group (Christian, Hindu, Muslim) in Kerala is distinctly different, but all are amazingly yummy. Kerala is one of my favorite places I have visited, ever.

He strenuously objected to this with sort of a side to side movement of the head (think “Bollywood” movie dance movement) trying to be positive, never saying “no” explicitly, but never agreeing to my demands.
The side-to-side movement means "yes," not "no." - it's sort of saying "OK, fine." Often accompanied (in Hindi-speaking areas), by the phrase "tik hai," which is sort of like "OK."
