I was unemployed for about six months when the price of oil dropped from $40/bbl to $8/bbl in the mid-1980's and Exxon laid everyone off. Unemployment insurance at the time lasted 6 months and I wanted "to grab for all the gusto I could" by capturing the full 6-month benefit.

It was a formative experience and I loved being unemployed. When I returned to the workforce, my saving & investing kicked into high gear and I retired for good in 1994 at age 38.

... and as they say -- "The rest is history."
