I would define the floor plan I want, and let the architect and structural engineer figure out what combination of bearing walls, sheer walls, columns, braced columns, beams, transfer girders, trusses, collar ties, ridge beams, etc, are required to make it happen.

Since most of those have aesthetic and financial implications, I think it needs to be an iterative dialogue rather than a linear instruction set.
