I'm adding just one small footnote to this thread.

Several years ago, I had a couple of {each a small position} "energy" MLPs in my Roth IRAs.
They were leveraged. When they went bankrupt, their unpaid loans became UTBI to me! {Talk about phantom income!}

Luckily, they did not exceed the $1,000 threshold, but it sure SCARED me & there wasn't a danged-thing I could do about it after the fact. I learned my lesson & my Roths are now bereft of all MLPs.
