I'm guessing the French refused initially to sell nuke subs on principle. While the US has never sold any to other countries (at least not for seven decades, since sending some to the UK), for similar principles, this time we were forced to part with them in order to steal a deal. I think it was De Gaul who said "France doesn't have allies, France has interests" - and the US railed against those self-serving ideals. But on us, it looks good.
