I've been seeing a lot of ad's for converting your standard 401k into a gold investment.

I've never seen one of these ads, so please be aware that I am answering blindly.

According to what I've read so far, this makes you more money faster, and some other stuff I really didn't understand.

Is this a real thing?
Do gold 401k's really make more money faster?
What are the basics of it?
How do you get it?

My guess is that it's just like every other ad flogging any type of investment. Ads always show that the investment that they are advertising is better than the alternative. I would take it with a huge grain of salt and only invest in things that you have done your own research on and feel that you understand the product. Since you say you didn't really understand it, I would strongly advise that you either ignore the ads, or do a lot more research.

Is this just for personal, private 401k accounts, or can someone who has a 401k through their employer get this too?

401(k)s through your employer only have the investments that are offered. So if your employer's plan offers the particular product (my guess is that they don't), you would be able to make an investment in it. If you are a business owner and are able to have your 'solo' 401(k), you may be able to invest in this product, if your administrator allows that product as an investment. My guess is, typical administrators (like Fidelity, Vanguard or Schwab) offering low/reasonable cost 401(k) accounts won't allow this product as an investment, and any administrator that will allow this product as an investment will charge extremely high fees.
