How serious a threat is identity theft? I know there are data breaches that we hear about in the media. But the credit companies I deal with seem very well attuned to the problem; they have called me a couple of times about suspicious activity on the my card -- which generally turned out alright -- and they have quickly sent brand new cards when something remained strange or unexplainable. Identity theft seems really serious when it happens, and I've read some real horror stories. But I'm wondering whether I should buy some protection (e.g., from LifeLock). I'm wondering about the worthwhileness of such companies, and would appreciate any feedback from this community.
