If everyone can't truly win the competition, it isn't a sport. Judged events fail that mark.

I don't think you can make such a broad claim, although I would agree that most judged events fail that mark. Case in point: what about the 2000 women's 10M platform diving competition? American no-name Laura Wilkinson (http://www.athens2004.com/en/ParticipantBiography?pid=1725952&rsc=DVW002901) came out of nowhere to defeat the mighty Chinese and take the gold.
