If he's buying new,

He's a student, so I doubt he can afford a new car. And we're not giving him a car (poor kid -- not! <g>)

I'd buy it from the dealership near him where he can have it serviced (under warranty) should need arise.

We buy new from dealerships, but (a) we're not students, and (b) we tend to keep cars till they're dead and/or useless.

I just know I've seen a lot of ads and license-plate-holders with the carmax logo.

He's definitely going to have to do research.

Thanks for the reply.
