If I were to resign myself to working for 30+ years, I would want to completely change fields at least every ten years

Good point. I tend to be the same way. But how does one switch fields in the first place? I'm at the 6-year mark in my current field (well, 13 if you count my co-op experience) and LOVE the idea of changing fields every 10 years.

So how are you going about the switch? I heard of one guy who decided when he was 65 to do exactly what you suggested. He ended up living to be like 100 or something, after illustrious "careers" in 3 different fields and a great start on his 4th.
