It appears from what you have written than you are planning to put an equal amount of the two funds in each account. Why don't you put $3K of VTSMX in your account and $3K of VEXMX in your wife's account? Diversification does not have to occur on an account by account basis.

This is true as long as both parties remain together...until death do you part. :)
