If raw stats were all that mattered then I'd give agree that Sproles would have a slight edge over Perry. Heck I don't have a problem with anyone saying that Sproles is more deserving anyway but the idea that Sproles is all that much better - or even all that much different - than Perry is falacious.

They had very similar numbers but they are not similar players nor did they play in a similar system against similar opponents. Perry not only had more touchdowns but he also had more yards-per-game, a more important stat than total yards (considering that Sproles played in two more games). He plays in a conference where most of the play is between the tackles and most of the defenses are designed to stop plays between the tackles. Furthermore you accused him of "wilting" under conference pressure when in fact it was in conference play that he stood tallest.

The guy rushed 51 times versus Michigan State averaging 4 yards per carry. In that game he only got caught behind the line of scrimmage one time. In other words, Michigan State knew he would be coming at them every single down and they could never stop him. Every down, between the tackles, 3 yards, 4 yards, 5 yards. This is not a non-accomplishment but rather an extraordinary accomplishment.

In the biggest game of the year against Ohio State he played with a pulled hammy and still pushed out over 150 yards. Why? Because he had to.

Sproles on the other hand plays for a team where the opponents have to account for two rushers on every down. Robertson and him. It is not hard to imagine that this is helpful to his production.

From a passing standpoint Michigan has a far more prolific attack so this may balance out the way the individual teams are defenses. K-State's opponents have to account for Robertson at all times. Michigan's opponents have to account for at least two wideouts at all times.

Fact is Perry and Sproles finished in a statistical dead-heat. CBS Sportsline rank them pretty much #1 and #1a. YPG the same. TDs similar. SOS the same.

Sproles easily could have won the Doak Walker but it is impossible to argue that Perry didn't deserve it as much.
