If you have not hit the income limit on Roth IRAs, why would you contribute to the Roth 401k before the Roth IRA? The Roth IRA would give you more flexibility in your investments.

People that lack discipline can benefit from using the 401k over the IRA. It gets taken directly from their paycheck, so they never have an opportunity to avoid investing.

I know you can have money taken from your account automatically each month for an IRA also, but that's still more work than some will do.
