I'm glad to see a man found them good -- many man avoid books with a female central character, and she's a doozy.

I have 2 daughters that read alot (ages 12 and 9) and I go out of my way at times to find strong female characters. Some authors that do a ggod job of this in fantasy are Diane Duane (young wizards), Tamora Pierce, and (to an extent) J.K. Rowlings. Duane and Pierce have the females as the central characters that work well with equally strong males. Rowlings as Hermione, and others, that work with her lead male. All three know how to capture the attention of kids from 7 to 107.
