I'm not an author, but I do write.

I'll have to agree with Liss, that a book with writing exercises is not (necessarily) the way to go. I've never used one, and I don't think I would. Writing is subjective to begin with, so all it would help you do (I suppose) would be to get your creative juices flowing.

I took a writing class at the begining of the year. Not for the writing exercises (basically we finished the first chapter of a book in six weeks) but for the structure of a novel and submission guidelines.

Find a time to write, and write. Easier said than done. I find the easiest thing to do is brownbag it to work, and spend about 45 minutes each work day writing.

Travel writing can be fun and challenging, afterall, you don't want it to sound like: "Here's what I did on summer vacation." I suggest looking through several travelish magazines and see how some of the articles are put together. Many magazines haver travel sections, so look around. Call some and ask for submission guidelines.

After following this board, I realize I'm not the writer some people are. I don't have stories pounding in my head--demanding to get out. I tend to have an idea or two rolling around up there with a handful of characters. I put ideas down on paper, flesh them out and see where they lead. Once I have a general idea for a story, then I start my outline and go with it.

But the thing is to keep writing.

Mike
