IMHO, most people save based on "how much do I have left?" which invariably is not enough. Fewer people ask the question "How much do I need to retire at age X? & therefore how do I need to save per month to get there?"

You could easily be in a 3rd group (potential over savers if there is such a thing) which is saving at a very high rate to reverse the question to "Saving at this rate, at what age will I have enough to retire?"

Personally, I don't save anything, I'm retired & therefore my job is spending, not saving.
