I just checked all my credit reports. Everything is sparkling clean, except for one smudge on my Trans Union.

I had a cell phone account with Airtouch from '96 - '98. I got a new phone with LA Cellular (now Verizon) in April '98. I called Airtouch to inquire as to when my contract expired (I knew it was coming up very soon) and they told me in two months. I figured, cool... I'll just eat 2 months of airtime payments until the contract expires and then I'll cancel it. That's exactly what I did. To be sure, I SPECIFICALLY ASKED the Airtouch rep while I was cancelling that the account was indeed off contract and was month-to-month at the time and that I wouldn't be charged any cancellation fees for it. The rep verified that was correct.

Lo and behold, six months down the road, Airtouch sent a bill to my parents' address (they had my current addy for over a year) charging me $150 for early termination. I called them to balk and they assured me that it was a mistake and it would be cleared.

Again, a few months later, I'm getting collection notices - at my parents' addy again! I called the collections company and stayed on the phone with them for an eternity. I spoke with the sup who told me that she'd talk with the manager and they review the case and get back to me with the decision. Surprise surprise... no one ever called. No new notices came (I updated my address with them) and I figured the matter was resolved and removed from my report.

Alas, it's still sitting on my Trans Union. Experian and Equifax don't show it, so I have to write in to TU with a dispute (might as well correct all the other erroneous crap on there while I'm at it - they have my curent employer as one from FOUR YEARS ago!)

I feel your pain, man! Dealing with these fools is completely frustrating, especially when you KNOW you're in the right. Argh! Best of luck. Dispute dispute dispute, is what I say! Get your credit report and get it taken care of.
