In case you are not familiar with how digital advertising works, sites sell what are essentially digital billboards to ad broker companies, which contract with advertisers to place their ads in the spots available. Because digital billboards don't have any physical restrictions, these advertisers do not have to conform to any specific standards on sizing or content. The host website has limited influence with the advertiser, depending on the fine print in the contract.

What I've seen in the past is that should an objectionable ad be served up on a Foolish website, TMF can contact the ad broker and request that the issue be addressed, but I am not sure of the degree of obligation by the broker to comply. Obviously, there is competition out there and they want to keep TMF's business (the public side of tends to be trafficked by consumers with disposable cash given the nature of the content), so I expect they will want to be responsive. But this is not a side of the business with which I am directly involved or familiar.

Who notes consumer advocate Clark Howard often has to apologize for ads served up on his website when they feature questionable marketing that directly conflict with his own consumer advice...
