In its final energy consumption, the EU as a whole achieved a 16% share of renewable energy in 2014 and an estimated 16.4% share in 2015.

DB2, Your numbers are wrong. The EU now gets more than 30% of its electricity from renewable sources...

30% may be the number for electrical generation, but I believe this study is trying to eat the whole enchilada. The first sentence in the OP is:

"A rapid transition to 100% renewable energy across Europe is possible with zero GHG emissions from power generation, heating, transport and desalination sectors before 2050!"

The numbers I linked (an increase from 16% to 16.4%) are for final energy consumption which I assume is total energy used.

Question: does the report include climate change forcing from land use changes (which is also a first order factor)? As an example, Ward modeled the climate forcing of land use and land cover change. We read "With all forcing agents considered together, we show that 40% (±16%) of the present-day anthropogenic RF can be attributed to LULCC."

Also, this article appeared in Carbon Brief last month:

Credible tracking of land-use emissions under the Paris Agreement
www.carbonbrief.org/guest-post-credible-tracking-of-land-use...
There is now a high expectation that a significant proportion of the required reduction in GHG emissions will come from changing the way we use land. This is evident in both the national pledges under Paris, where land use is assumed to provide up to a quarter of planned emission reductions by 2030....

Unlike emissions from fossil fuel use and industry, emissions and sinks from land-based activities are notoriously difficult to measure and verify. In fact, a large discrepancy has already been identified between countries’ GHG inventories and independent global modelling studies....
