Last week tracfone told me that the 5 year old, $20 android phone I'd been using was no longer compatible with their network. They offered me a phone for $7 that I could upgrade to. I opted to use the Motorola smartphone I already have which I use as a camera and for GPS maps and bought a sim card for 99 cents.

The old tracfone didn't use a data plan. It was just voice and texts (texts were charged at 0.4 minutes of telephone voice time.)

The tracfone folks transferred my 21 months of remaining service time and 4,700 minutes to my Motorola phone and threw in 4,700 texts and 4.6 GB of data for free. Process of shutting down the old phone and transferring service to new one took about 2 hours and was problem-free.
