Indeed, The US Coast Guard currently doesn't allow for the use of both thier TA and GI Bill. But the good thing about thier TA is that it is the same amount as the AD component gets ($5,000/yr), which isin't too shabby once the well runs dry on the GI Bill.

The REAP program is something new that was started for mobilized reservists. this is a program that allows 60% of the CH 30 related amounts for college. I have to go back and review this again, but from how I originally read it, this can be used with the CH106 reserve GI Bill, which will give one the equivalent of a CH30 benefit for college. The drawback on this is that it has to be use while still in the active reserves. It is not portable like CH30 is. That is one reason why any reservist who performs more than 2 consecutive years on Title-10, should pay the $1,200 into the CH30, as it is portable and has a great return on the money spent.

CLEP and DANTES are great tools, but one has to make sure the effort they place into one of the courses is worth the effort. To just take the course and not be able to apply it to anything can be a waste of time. I would make sure I coordinated with a college on what they will accept before taking them. The could be better spent taking an online college course.

I recieved a Associate's Degree in Nursing (had plans to get a Army commission, that changed in 1999). I plan to enter back into college again to work on a bachelor's in another major. The REAP in itself will be enough to accomplish that with the 12 "full-time" months I have left with the VA. It will probably take me a couple years part-time to do it..
