Individuals over age 65 have until eight months after group insurance terminates to enroll in Medicare. Enrollment without penalty can be at any time between reaching age 65 and eight months after leaving a group plan.

That's exactly what we thought. But she is still covered by the employer's group plan until the end of April 2014. Even so SS rep says she has to be enrolled in Part B no later than December 2013 to avoid penalty. Unlike most employers, hers never required her to have Medicare after age 65. They carried her on their group plan just like an under-65 employee. That continued for a year after her retirement according to the written seperation plan she received. The only change was instead of having the employee's share of the premium deducted from her paycheck she now pays it by deduction from her bank account.
