infotainme: "I am not asking these questions because this is something I am seriously interested in doing, rather, the person whom I was having this discussion with (close enough to discuss personal finances but not close enough for me to say bluntly -- sounds like it's "too good to be true") got into a debate about using home equity for investing.

My argument (without fully understanding what they are involved with -- yes, something with VUL) is that I'm for saving in traditional retirement methods (401k, iras, investing in mutual funds & stocks)."

Mrs X. has swallowed teh Kool-Aid.

If you really want to read about VUL (both upside and DOWNSIDE), VULs have been discussed plenty on the insurance board here at TMF. The consensus opinion (if I may be so bold), is that VULs are way oversold, and while they may make sense for some people, it is a very small percentage of households.

My post 13404 on the insurance board:

JAFO31: "I have several recent posts (last 6 months) discussing VUL purchase decisions, and for investment purposes, IMO, whole life is worse choice than VUL, so you should search for them."
