Insurance benefits. Currently DW is out of work. If we were not married, she would have to pay her own premiums for coverage. The cost of those premiums would certainly affect her lifestyle.

Not where I work. Gay couples can have pretty much the same benefits as married people.

And better benefits than single people.

We also enjoy a discounted rate for car insurance, as married couples are (actuarily speaking) considered to be more stable.

That, of course, is a call made by your insurance company, not by homophobic Christian Republicans.

What about the emotional aspects of not being allowed to marry? Depression can easily affect lifestyle. I watched depression destroy a family member. Not a lifestyle one would want to 'enjoy'.

Depression is a disease. I don't know that it's caused by failure to have state-sanctioned gay marriage.

And marriage, per se, isn't prohibited. It isn't recognized by the government, but nothing stops a gay couple from vowing fidelity to each other.

Then there's social security survivor's benefits, not available to life partners who are not married. That's a financial benefit that would certainly affect the lifestyle of older partners who've worked together throughout their lives. Especially at marginal income levels.

You got me there.

But I don't think this issue is about Social Security survivor benefits.
