The last time I looked at the dividend percent for the Vanguard Federal MMF, it was 0.23%. PenFed's 5 yr CD is now down to 3.51%, I believe. Money in MMF's at brokerage accounts seem to be below 0.1%. With Smith Barney I just took out a 6 mo. CD at 0.55% (This is money I usually make donations out of during the next year.).

Vanguard charges you $80 a year for a brokerage account under $100,000, and you need that to buy CDs. I really should transfer my small Smith Barney account to Vanguard to bring the value above $100,000. Actually at one time it was above $100,000, but the bear market has taken care of that.

I'm holding lots of money in cash earning, essentially, no interest thinking preservation of capital, but that is true only if the inflation rate is zero.
