The 4,000 April sales figure would outnumber by about 250 all of the MKZs sold in January, February and March.

The average transaction price of the new MKZ — about half of which are hybrid models costing the same as gasoline counterparts — will be up about 20 percent in April, Farley said, jumping to $41,891 according to data from Kelley Blue Book.

Farley said early indicators point toward big sales gains in important markets like California, where market share jumped nearly 10 percentage points to 14.5 percent, according to

"Obviously this early data is telling us the MKZ is really driving our growth," Farley said. "It's not just important in how the business is growing, but where it's growing."

Ford expects to make waves in the New York and Miami regions, too, though the new MKZ did not spark any market share gains in those areas, Ford said.

Big transaction price increase and strong growth in California. Sounds promising.... and surprising to me.
