But the market for dealings between businesses, known as 'B2B e-commerce,' was worth $145 billion worldwide last year, according to information technology research firm Gartner. Europe accounted for $32 billion and by 2004 European B2B will be worth over $2.34 trillion.

Gartner puts worldwide B2B e-commerce in 2004 at over $7.29 trillion, nearly as big as the whole U.S. economy in 1999

``This is one area where Europe has to catch up with the United States market rapidly, and the signs are that this will happen within the next four years,' said Gartner principal analyst Petra Gartzen.

The ``information appliances market' will grow to $17.8 billion worldwide in 2004, up from $2.4 billion in 1999, according to industry researchers IDC -- they do not yet include the much larger cellphone business in that grouping

With Internet access expected to be available on virtually all the mobile devices to be sold by 2003 -- and current forecasts say around one billion of them will be sold by then -- the mobile segment of the ``e-everything' market will be big

Gartner forecasts that shipments of new devices offering non-PC links to the Internet will overtake PC links next year. Mobile commerce, according to a Durlacher report last year, will be worth 23 billion euros ($22.68 billion) by 2003.
