I would hazard a guess that the steady rise in homeowners putting out bird feeders (we have 5 out including suet) has led to gatherings of small birds which attract Coopers and Sharpies.

This seems somewhat sleazy on my part--feeding at the bottom of the food chain so I can observe the acrobatics and beauty at the top.

I could wish these small hawks would run off with the raccoons. But that won't happen. And despite the fact there are plenty of Bald Eagles and Barred Owls around the raccoons continue to thrive.
