Hi -- and thanks for the idea of this board!

We're in the process of retiring early, at 50. We've been living overseas (Saudi Arabia) for a while, and have been living on a boat in the Chesapeake Bay during our twice a year 4-6 week vacations back to the USA. We've been selling off things we can't take back with us, and getting ready for the packers to come in 2 weeks, to take what's left. In less than 90 days, we will be moving back to live on the boat full time for the next few years.

Our plans are really detailed: head south when it gets cold, head north when it gets hot, stop when we think there's something interesting to see or do, and move on when we're bored!

Actually, the plans are slightly more detailed than that -- but only slightly. We plan to winter in the Florida Keys at the end of 2001, see the New England coast, perhaps to Nova Scotia, at the height of the summer of 2002, then winter over in the Caribbean the following winter. A Great Lakes and Mississippi River trip might follow, with a Gulf Coast tour after that.

For what it's worth, Passagemaker magazine (which focuses on the general type of boat and boating we are involved with) surveyed couples who were living on their boats and cruising full time. Average yearly costs, including fuel, food, maintenance, and so forth (but not loan payments) was under $25,000. So part of our ER strategy is to spend a few years letting the portfolio grow while we're not taking so much out, so that if and when we grow up and settle down, we can do so with a greater spending budget.

PS: Saw Jimmy when he was in Norfolk last summer -- lots of fun!
