Such frustration! I would like to backup my iphone X to my laptop -- NOT to icloud. I have tried chatting with Apple support online and they want my serial number in order for me to do an online chat. I type in my serial number and I get a message that says it is not a valid serial number. So, there appears to be no option to online chat and ask WHY my serial number is "Not Valid" or whatever. It is so frustrating! Is there any [hone number to just call Apple and get help?? Gosh, I guess that is old fashioned.

I would like to backup my iphone X to my laptop. I plugged the phone into a USB port on my laptop and i get a message on my phone if the laptop should trust this device. I click on trust this device. I believe it used to go to itunes at that point. Now, it just does nothing.

Can anyone suggest a way for me to contact Apple and get help?? Thanks.\

It is reasonable that Apple wants to track problems/support to specific phones. Hence they ask a serial number - unless of course they have your product's S/N associated with the Phone number you are calling from.

It is possible that someone at Apple just out of meanness says your phone S/N is not valid, but I doubt that. So if someone at Apple said you gave them an invalid S/N, believe them - they really believe you have provided an invalid S/N.

There are limited possibilities -

You did provide an invalid number - more on that below.

Apple's database has some how lost the S/N of your phone.

The Phone in question was be reported stolen, destroy or something else AND Apple's system for some reason classify/label such phones as "invalid" S/N

The best way to get your phone's S/N if from the phone screen. The numbers on the back are really small. Anybody who can read the back of the phone has eyesight beyond 20/20. So fire up the Phone, go to Settings; General and "About" -- Take a screen shot and be prepared to email that screen shot to Apple when you call.

Next just call AppleCare, tell them your previous contact stated the S/N was not valid and you are ready to email the screen shot so they can see that is the number on your phone if the person you are speaking to also thinks the S/N is not valid.

Here is a site that will show the configuration of my iPhone X from its S/N

A few notes:
1. What type of laptop, Mac or Windows? Which ever one, please make sure it is on the latest greatest version of the OS. For Win10, this actually means sometimes doing it manually. Let me know if you need help with that.
2. If Mac, scroll down a bit on this page and it will walk you through: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977
3. Have you enlarged the font on your iPhone?
4. Do you see dots at the end of your iPhone SN?
5. If the two above are true, then the reason your serial number is "invalid" is because you are only giving a partial SN.

HTH, but if you still need help, post again and I'll walk you through whatever it is.

I believe it used to go to itunes at that point. Now, it just does nothing.

Whether iTunes opens or not is partially a matter of settings on the computer. Open iTunes manually. Give it some time to see the phone and make the phone icon appear. Click on the phone icon.

If the phone icon doesn't appear I have nothing else to suggest.

I do. Make sure the phone is unlocked. Enter your passcode, give it your fingerprint, gaze longingly into the blank screen - whatever it takes to unlock it.

My phone started requiring an unlock when connected to the computer with one of the updates - late last year or early this year. It won't even charge from the computer unless I unlock it.
