++Is Dell getting slightly stronger or slightly weaker at managing its inventories? ++

I haven't got three years of hard numbers available, but Dell has already set an amazing standard for inventory control: turnover takes roughly 7-8 days. That's just phenomenal for a box maker.

As for direction, I think it recently went up to 8 -- on the surface, a bad sign. But management recently set a goal to reduce turnover to 4.5 days. Yep,just 108 hours. Even if they can't do it, I'll bet they get darned close. So, I'm confident inventory control will move in the right direction.

(not surprisingly, long on Dell)
